ECFC/SYSA U10 Turkey Shoot a Huge Success!
A quick note to let you all know that ECFC's U10 Turkey Shoot event was a big success this past weekend - thanks to the efforts of many of folks. We had a full slate of 24 teams, (14 boys teams, 10 girls teams) playing on six small-sided fields at Shoreline A/B. It was a cold morning – there was even a brief snow flurry - but the Sun ended up peeking through the overcast, and all the energy of the kids certainly warmed things up! What a great way for the U10s in SYSA to finish off their fall season - I know many within SYSA really appreciate the event, and the efforts from ECFC to organize it.
Barbara Detering, Richard Pelly, Curtis Kopf, Karen Launceford and Scott Vorsburg were the event coordinators representing the U11 teams - they did a super job as the event ran smoothly. There was also great help from volunteers from their respective teams, and a few U11 players were on hand for the event as well. We had six fine referees from the ECFC ranks keeping things in order on the fields. The goal set-up/take-down went well and on that topic, an extra special mention of thanks must be made to Ivar and Laurie Hildahl, (Cole U14, Kate U12). The Hildahl’s allowed us to use their side yard to temporarily store the 12 goals for two weeks leading up to the event. Barbara, Richard, Curtis, Karen, and Scott - please forward this to your respective teams and extend a big "thank you" to the volunteers and players for their help. There was also a strong presence from the coaching staff - Bobby Howe, Jon Matsushita, and Dave Russell, were on site and spoke to interested parents. Bobby, Jon, and Dave, thank you very much for your efforts. So, thanks again to all for making the event a successful one. Even as the event was still going on I had received some great feedback from several of the participants – excellent stuff everyone! Dan BarsherECFC Board of Directors/ SYSA Commissioner

New Article: "Speed of Play" by Bobby Howe
Over the last twenty years, the game of soccer has become quicker and more technical. Top professional, college and youth teams, including Emerald City FC, covet the player who has pure speed and quick feet. But, if a player lacks a sprinter’s pace, they need not worry. Other elements and abilities come into play, too. CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING

GU15 F92 Green in semis at Surf Cup
The girls U15 Green team advanced to the semi finals of the always very challenging Surf Cup the last weekend in July. Advancing first in their bracket, the girls beat the MVLA Avalanche in PKs to go to semis. There, they lost to Arsenal 2-0 in a game that could have gone either way. Soon the girls will be focusing on their first year of High school soccer instead of club soccer! Great finish to the summer play.
Boys U15 Green are Lake Oswego Nike Champs for 2007
BU15 M92 Green team prevailed in the final over the home club's team in Lake Oswego's Nike Cup. Coached by Aron Hyde and Nick Loveless (when Aron was with the BU14 team), the boys had a great time with four guest players who filled out the ever changing group who could attend on different days. They scored 14 goals and had only 2 against in four matches, all wins. Congrats lads and thanks to Bobby Howe and players from the other 5 ECFC teams in the tournament for watching some of the matches!

Classic in One Weekend for the BU15 M92 White team
Congratulations to Matt Olson and all the players. Playing in Pasco in high heat conditions, they won 4 games in a row on June 2 and 3 and will compete in the Classic league next fall. Along the way, they even had to overcome a 3-1 half time deficit in the second match. Quite a feat in the heat! Click here to get more details on this accomplishment!
The team next went to the finals in the Baker Blast on June 24.
Reports from Regionals
Report from June 24 No Washington State teams won Regionals this year. BU18 M88 Green lost their final youth match 1-0 to Colorado. It has been an amazing run for this team of players over the course of 8 years with ECFC for many of them. Here's to great college future for them all, in both soccer and educational aspects! They were glad to leave the heat in Vegas. Shoes melting on the turf was crazy!
GU13 F93 Green lost to a terrific Arizona team in their quarter final match- Congrats to the girls for their second trip to Regionals. More to come from this group of players! Pictures from an initial round robin match game are featured on the state page www.wsysa.com GU14 F92 Green is also to be congratulated on their return to Regionals. It is only the hardest tournament in the west to be a repeat winner. Here is to a great 4 more years for this group of talented players.
GU13 ECFC F94 Green wins Skagit Firecracker Tournament
With a draw that let them escape horrible traffic to Burlington on Friday night, the girls won two matches on Saturday by total score of 9-0. Sunday brought a tough opponent, Skagit Storm. A 1-0 win had them advance to the finals - but the layout of the 6 team bracket meant they played Skagit as the second place team in the finals. In the time between the matches, the girls figured out how to handle the physical nature of their opponent and convincingly beat them with terrific soccer in the final, 3-0.
Opportunity to become a Referee with ECFC's support!
ECFC encourages all players 14 and older to take the class. Best case: you will embark upon a successful 2nd career, learn valuable life lessons, greater independence, financial self sufficiency, etc Worst case: you will learn more about the game, and can appreciate it from the referees perspective.
EMERALD CITY FC will reimburse all current Emerald City players for the cost of the clinic itself ($35 only, 1/2 the total cost) once our player is registered as local referree.
Click here for details on referee clinics being offered in Seattle this summer.

ECFC M88 Goalkeeper Selects Michigan
After a visit to the University of Michigan last weekend, ECFC M88 Goalkeeper Chris Blais has verbally committed to play soccer for the Wolverines next fall. Blais, a senior at Kennedy High School, liked what he saw on the Ann Arbor campus, including the American football match that he attended between intrastate rivals Michigan and Michigan State (won by UM 31-13) in front of 115,000 Wolverine fans. In addtion to his exploits for ECFC, Chris is a two sport star (soccer and basketball) at Kennedy. See the article in the Saturday, 10/14/2006 Seattle Times.
ECFC Hosts "Free play" Fridays for U12-U14 Players: September 15 - October 27
When Emerald City FC Coaching Director Bobby Howe was a lad outside London, he often played pick-up soccer games with his friends. There, on the make-shift pitch, Howe and his mates would choose teams, devise games, learn tricks, practices moves and create new ones. It was all about freedom and improvisation, without stress or structure. Howe says those years of "free play’’ were key to his development as a professional soccer player. "It was everything,’’ Howe recalls. "Our imaginations ran wild. I want our kids to get the idea of free play. That’s where they really learn the stuff that can’t be coached.’’ Emerald City FC is pleased to announce that its young ECFC players can soon let their soccer imaginations run wild. Beginning on Friday Sept. 15, the club will supervise pick-up soccer matches for boys and girls at Ingraham High School, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Players from the club’s U12, U13 and U14 teams are urged to come out and just play soccer. The idea here is to encourage free play, creativity and improvisation – not to mention having a whole lot of fun! Boys and girls will play separately but that could change, Howe says. These free-form-Friday nights will continue for seven weeks, ending on Oct. 27th. ...Read more

Girls U13 Green Team - Chinook Cup Champions
ECFC Girls U-13 Green team coached by Nate Daligcon, won the Platinum Division of the Chinook Cup this past weekend. The tournament had 224 teams, with 39 of those in the Girls U-13 brackets. It is a huge event with great soccer.
The Emerald City girls kept their cool through the heat, taking their bracket 12 goals for 0 against. Having one of the highest point totals they got a bye directly to semi’s. And in a late Saturday evening game, the Green team played the FC Vancouver Independence to a draw in regulation and two overtimes. This was the second tournament this summer the girls had to go to kicks from the mark to move out of a semi final game. This time, with some great kicks and equally awesome saves by keeper Justine, the girls take the game. The Vancouver girls were an awesome team and great sports after the game. Even the parents from Vancouver were offering congratulations and wishing the girls well in the finals.
The Platinum final set for 8AM Sunday morning promised to be a competitive match. The CFC Liberty (Salem, Oregon) had taken their bracket and beat some of the best teams from Washington, Oregon and Idaho. Our girls came out strong and with an impressive possession game scored two un-answered goals. A fine defensive effort allowed no goals, in fact not a single goal for the tournament. Great job girls! Final score 2-0 and the Championship goes to Emerald City FC F93 Green!
ECFC M95 (BU11) Green Wins Federal Way Blastoff Tournament!
The ECFC M95 Green team went undefeated at the Federal Way Blastoff. The tournament was held August 11-13th. Congrats to M95 Green!
Report by Liam van Leynseele (player, age 9) The tournament got off to a slow start Friday afternoon—a really slow start—because of a car accident earlier in the day, and the traffic on I-5 barely creeped along, from Seattle to Federal Way. But things improved quickly, and by the end of the first game, we were up 5-1. Saturday morning started off, with a hard game against our nemesis from the Diadora Cup Eastside FC, but in the end, we won.

ECFC GU17 Green Runners-Up at Colorado Rush Kickoff
The Emerald City FC Girls U17 Green team just completed a very successful trip to the Colorado Rush Kickoff Classic outside Denver Colorado. The team went undefeated in their bracket, winning three games against some of Colorado's best teams, while battling high temperatures and high altitude. In the semifinal, they beat the Colorado Rush Nike U18 team 5-0. In a very tough U17/18 Championship match, ECFC lost 2-0 to four time Colorado State champs Colorado Rush Nike U17. Despite the loss, the tournament was a great experience, and the girls played some of their finest soccer of the season in this final tuneup before the regular P1 season gets underway. For more info on the team and their efforts at this tournament, check out their website. ...Read more
F94 Green Wins Beaverton Cup 06
The story that leads to this tournament win started in March when this year's Emerald City U12F Green team was selected. The team is a mix of players from last year's White and Green teams plus five talented newcomers. The girls spent the spring working on fundamental skills and learning to play as a team, always seeking to play attractive, elegant soccer while playing in the top division of the Spring PDL. The PDL started out with a 5 goal loss to the NW Nationals and ended in a 1-1 tie with Crossfire in the final game. The team improved each week but still had not beaten a top tier opponent. Fast forward to July 17th when the team gathered at The Inn of the 7th Mountain in Bend, Oregon to train for the Adidas Beaverton Cup. We practiced and played each morning and evening while the middle of every day was filled with swimming, white water rafting, lava tube exploring and a myriad of other activities that helped the girls bond as a team and improve as players. ...Read more
Diadora Cup 2006
The Emerald City FC teams played very hard this past week during the Diadora cup tournament. Congratulations to everyone who participated. We would like to thank all of the parent volunteers, players, and coaches for making this event possible. Here are some notable team results: Complete schedules and results at the Diadora Cup website.
Boy's U-11 Green 1st Place (won all games shorthanded 10 v 11). Tournament report by Max O'Neal (player) We were full of joy as we stood up on the podium with each other. The BU11 Green team, the BU17 Green team, and the GU15 Green team were all ECFC Diadora Cup winners. We had won the tournament with 10 players and no subs under scorching heat. We played our hearts out and showed everyone what we were made of. But it wasn’t easy. This story begins in a state of panic. It was a cold morning as we faced our first opponent, Evergreen Soccer Academy. We started out with 9 players. We heard the cheers from the parents as we stepped onto the field. We were motivating each other before the game, so our energy level was at its maximum. Barry was late because of a mishap, so he made it for the second half. We still only had 10 players. ...Read more
Girls' U-14 Green 1st Place. No rest for the weary as the recently crowned Far West Regional Champion Emerald City 92 Green returned home from Boise to compete in their home club tournament the Diadora Cup. A strong field of contenders lined up to take their best shot at the Champs including our sister team the WSPL P1 bound ECFC 92 White and the P1 Northwest National Rayos. Group play was arduous having to play 4 games with 5 in the group. As now is the norm with the proverbial bullseye on their back the very motivated Eastside 92 side applied a stingy defense effort and held for 0-0 tie. The girls rebounded and won the rest of the games in group including a convincing 3-0 win over the P1 Rayos. Hopes of an all Emerald City final were thwrated by the Rayos who advanced out of the semis against the ECFC White team. Emerald City Green quickly avenged the loss pounding in 2 early goals and cruising to a 2-0 win and the Championship trophy. Congratulation again ladies!
Girls' U-15 Green 1st Place. ECFC girls '91 green team won its' first ever major event at the 2006 Diadora Tournament. It was a great team effort that put us in the finals against the P1 Marauders, after they had defeated the state champs, Eastside Red, in the semi. With a 1-0 victory in the final, the '91 green's finally won their first championship after making the finals in both of their previous tournaments, the Rainier Challenge and the FC Portland Cup. Keep an eye on these girls, as they are going places... like P1.
Boys' U-17 Green 1st Place. For the second consecutive year the Emerald City 89 squad captured the championship at the Diadora Cup this year in the U17 age bracket. Playing at the same time as the World Cup final the boys unlike their Italian and French heroes managed to end the contest in regulation with a 2-1 win over Crossfire. They then quickly proceeded to the hospitality tent to watch the exciting shoot out in the World Cup final. Congratulations ECFC - and Italia!
Girls' U-17 Green 2nd Place. ECFC GU17 Green knows how the French feel. In this team's seventh Diadora tournament, the girls were looking to make it five straight Diadora championships in a row. Moving through their bracket, and the semis, they ran into an old foe (Eastside Red) in the championship match. Battling to a 0-0 tie at the end of regulation, and then through a scoreless golden goal overtime, the GU17 championship match was decided on penalty kicks. Like the French, ECFC GU17 Green came up short. Good work girls! They will be back next year!
ECFC '92 Wins Far West Regionals... Claim title as the "Best of the West"
At the Far West Regionals in Boise, every day seemed like it's own tournament. Imagine playing in (and winning) six competitive tournaments in six consecutive weeks. Right now feels like the end of that sixth tournament and we’ve just been crowned the champion of the toughest region in the country. I know it's often over used, but our girls left everything on the field. They gave everything they had. Just one ounce less and they might have come up short. As a result, ECFC finishes with a 6-0 record (17 Goals For and 0 Goals Allowed) against the "Best of the West" and claimed the title of Region IV Champions. The first game I was on my cell phone non-stop giving updates. But each day brought fewer calls and more new arrivals. Some drove and some flew. At the end of the quarter-final game, I was so choked up I could barely get the words out "WE WON!!!" The dad on the other end of the call wanted details and I just couldn't compose myself enough to say more than "WE WON! WHAT A GAME! WE WON!" Two days later, he packed up the family and headed for Boise. "We had to come for this (the finals)" he said. He told me the next day "It was worth the drive!" By the time they arrived on Saturday, I think most of us had already reached that surreal mental state of... Oh My Gosh, were in the finals. The last ones to arrive drove all-night and made it just minutes before kick-off of the finals. ...Read more

ECFC Coach Craig Tomlinson Returns to Sounders Active Lineup
ECFC coach Craig Tomlinson returns to the Sounders active roster after recovering from a torn ACL that kept him sidelined for the 2005 season. Players on Craig's BU11 and GU18 teams were delighted to see him score his first goal as a returning player during the ECFC Night at the Sounders on May 20th, 2006. Sounders Press Release When he's not coaching for ECFC, or playing as a forward for the Sounders, Craig is engaged in community outreach programs. Three times he was community player of the year with the Sounders. Video clip of one of Craig's presentations at a local elementary school. His dedication and passion for the sport is infectious. More than once he has been spotted changing in his car to coach one of his teams immediately after playing in a Sounders game. Craig, born in Kingston Jamaica, prefers to stay positive and not take things too seriously. Being a kid at heart, he is a natural with the U11 boys team. He's like one of them at times, only taller. Always willing to head a ball to a player before practice, prodding his players to show him their best new moves. Of course, he has a few moves of his own! Sounders Pictures The entire ECFC community is pulling for Craig's continued good health and success.
